Născut în 1963, în Knoxville, Tennessee, Tarantino a fost numit destul de adecvat după un personaj dintr-un serial de televiziune, fierarul metis Quint, interpretat de Burt Reynolds în Gunsmoke. La vârsta de doi ani, mama singură a viitorului realizator de filme s-a mutat cu el în South Bay, zona la sud de Los Angeles, unde avea să locuiască în următoarele două decenii.
Vecinii lui din orasul Torrance erau o combinatie de albi si negri si el a fost expus unei game largi de influente cinematografice si cultură pop. De exemplu, filmele cu arte martiale au continuat să ruleze în cartierele de negri mult timp după ce epoca kung fu apusese în alte părti. Tarantino a reusit să le urmărească până târziu în anii 70.
Tarantino a abandonat scoala la 17 ani pentru a lua cursuri si a se sustine cu diverse slujbe. La 22 de ani, a găsit un al doilea cămin în Arhivele Video din Manhattan Beach, unde cunostintele sale vaste despre filmele vechi i-au fost în cele din urmă de folos. Cu colaboratorii Roger Avery si Jerry Martinez, Tarantino a transformat Arhivele Video într-o scoală de film improvizată. A început să scrie pentru a scenele practice la cursurile sale de actorie.
După ce a lucrat cu Avery si alti câtiva prieteni la filmul My Best Friend's Wedding, un film dur de talia lui Clerks a lui Kevin Smith, Tarantino a petrecut mai multi ani plini de frustrări scriind si încercând să lanseze două scenarii, fiecare intentionat să fie debutul său regizoral. Partial din frustrarea creată de dificultătile cu care s-a confruntat la realizarea unui „film adevărat” cu un scriitor necunoscut care regizează, Tarantino a scris Reservoir Dogs în 1991.
Dogs a fost scris initial pentru a fi cel mai mic proiect imaginabil: o poveste a unui jaf în care furtul nu apare în film, pagini întregi de dialog necesitând un singur decor. S-a intentionat ca un film super-ieftin de 16 mm cu Tarantino si prietenii lui de la Arhivele Video interpretând toate rolurile.
Din fericire, un producător în devenire, Lawrence Bender, a citit si a fost impresionat de scenariul pentru Dogs. El l-a implorat pe Tarantino să îi acorde timp o lună pentru a încerca să îl transforme într-un „film real”. Bender a dat scenariul actorului Harvey Keitel, iar entuziasmul lui Keitel a atras mai multi actori buni si în cele din urmă un buget decent de productie.
Filmat în mai putin de o lună în locatii din Los Angeles, cu o echipă care a ajuns să îi includă pe Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth, Laurence Tierney, Chris Penn si Tarantino însusi, pe lângă Keitel, Dogs a avut un succes fenomenal, mai întâi la Festivalul de Film din Sundance si apoi în toată lumea.
Si deodată Tarantino era la modă si ambele scenarii la care lucrase înainte de Dogs s-au vândut repede: acestea au ajuns True Romance (1992, regizat de Tony Scott) si Natural Born Killers (1993, rescris în mare parte si regizat de Oliver Stone).
Pulp Fiction din 1994 a fost un colaj fictiv politist cu multe straturi în timp, care a întretesut povestile mai multor personaje împreună cu talentul narativ cosmopolit. Un film ca un joc de sah tridimensional, Pulp Fiction a restaurat cariera legendei din anii 70, John Travolta, la strălucirea adecvată, a consolidat statutul de star al actorului Samuel L. Jackson si a initiat relatia de lucru cu interpreta pe care a descris-o de atunci înainte ca „actrita mea”, Uma Thurman.
După o pauză de trei ani, Tarantino a scris si a regizat Jackie Brown în 1997, un film politist pe baza romanului lui Elmore Leonard, Rum Punch. Pam Grier a primit nominalizări atât la Globul de Aur, cât si la Premiul SAG pentru interpretarea ei în rolul principal, iar actorul Robert Forster a fost nominalizat la un Premiu Oscar pentru cel mai bun actor în rol secundar. Au completat echipa unicat: Samuel L. Jackson (nominalizat de asemenea pentru Globul de Aur), Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda si Michael Keaton.
Primul obiectiv al carierei lui Tarantino a fost cel de a deveni actor si a continuat să interpreteze roluri în propriile filme si în operele altora. El a fost hotul cunoscut drept dl. Brown („Ăsta-i un pic prea asemănător cu dl. Rahat.”) în Reservoir Dogs si panicosul Jimmie Dimmick, împovărat cu un cadavru proaspăt în Pulp Fiction. În sectiunea „Man from Hollywood” din Four Rooms, a fost un regizor dur. A interpretat de asemenea rolul fratelui mai nebun al banditului George Clooney, Richard Gecko, în filmul lui Robert Rodriguez From Dusk till Dawn, a interpretat rolul principal în Destiny Turns on the Radio a lui Jack Baren (1995) si a apărut în Girl 6 a lui Spike Lee (1996).
Cu partenerul său de productie, Lawrence Bender, prin firma acestora A Band Apart Productions, Tarantino a fost producător executiv în filmul October Killing Zoe regizat de Roger Avery. El a „prezentat” lansarea internă din 2001 a clasicului de arte martiale Iron Monkey a Maestrului Yuen Wo Ping în 1993 si a fost producător executiv al comediei negre Curdled (1996) a lui Reb Braddock si a filmului concert God said, „HA!” a Juliei Sweeny (1999).
În următorii ani care au trecut între lansarea lui Jackie Brown si realizarea lui Kill Bill, Tarantino a muncit din greu la un film de război, Inglorious Bastards, care a fost anuntat ca un proiect Miramax pentru 2004.
Revelatie a anilor `90 adulat si contestat in egala masura. Prin doar doua filme si citeva scenarii impune un cinematograf conceput dupa o logica spatiala si temporala proprie, in care violenta se imbina cu umorul, parodia unui gen consacrat (in speta filmul negru), cu naturalismul situatiilor.

Au mai rămas doar câteva ore până la decernarea premiilor Oscar pe anul 2010. Nelinişte, frământări şi suspans, asta este tema de bază a acestei nopţi fierbinţi de martie. Toată suflarea globului va sta cu ochii lipiţi de ecranele televizoarelor ca să afle in timp real cine va fii marele învingător al acestui an.
Preferatul meu este drama Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, o poveste emoţionantă despre viaţă, sacrificii, ambiţii si în cele din urmă despre umanitate si valenţele ei.

Vernisajul expozitiei de fotografie a regizorului Radu Afrim va avea loc joi, 4 martie 2010, la ora 18.30, la Libraria Engleza "Anthony Frost". In cadrul vernisajului va fi lansat numarul doi al revistei de fotografie Punctum.
Expozitia de fotografie Radu Afrim poate fi vizitata la Libraria Engleza "Anthony Frost" (Calea Victoriei, nr. 45), in perioada 4 martie-25 martie 2010.
Revista Punctum publica in fiecare numar un portofoliu al unei personalitati din domeniul cultural, pasionata de fotografie: Radu Afrim a fost invitatul special al acestei editii. "Incerc sa duc inspre bizar un anumit tip de erotism, sa creez o atmosfera suprarealista care sa nu se regaseasca neaparat in compozitie, ci in trupurile celor pe care ii fotografiez", a declarat regizorul intr-un interviu realizat de fotograful Cosmin Bumbut, editorul publicatiei. "Trupurile au povesti. Iar eu fotografiez intamplari si trupuri, nu trupuri lipsite de intamplari", a mai spus regizorul.
Al doilea numar al revistei Punctum include si proiectul "Ultima Transhumanta", al fotografului Dragos Lumpan, dar si un material amplu despre istoria fotografiei romanesti, in care sunt prezentate portretele etnografice realizate de Carol Szathmari la mijlocul secolului al XIX-lea.
Revista Punctum se gaseste de vanzare la Libraria Engleza "Anthony Frost", la librariile Carturesti si la magazinul de echipamente foto F64.Publicatia apare trimestrial si a fost tiparita cu sprijinul magazinului de echipamente foto F64.

Cineast cu talent de magician, minte de business-man si suflet de copil.
Pentru el, cinematograful este un imens si perpetuu parc de distractii in care orice fantezie devine realitate, iar cheia supravietuirii celei de a saptea arte se afla in rezerva de infantilism prezenta in fiecare spectator, pe care filmul trebuie sa o descopere si sa o cultive.
Pornind de la aceste premise, filmele sale devin campionii box-office-ului planetar (sase dintre ele se afla in fruntea listei titlurilor cu cele mai mari incasari din toate timpurile). Efectele speciale (tot mai performante), suspansul story-ului, interpretarea actorilor (el are darul de a descoperi si confectiona vedete din actori practic necunoscuti) constituie garantia succesului.
Genul predilect: filmul de aventuri (stiintifico-fantastice, de groaza, in costume de epoca etc.) argumentat cu episoade sentimentale.

Expoziţia fotografică - „ProNatura”
Vineri 5 martie 2010, cu începere de la ora 18:00, va avea loc vernisajul expoziţiei de fotografie intitulată „ProNatura”, realizată de membrii grupului de fotografi FotoVest din Timişoara.
Manifestarea va fi găzduită în cadrul centrului comercial Iulius Mall, vis-a-vis de Cărtureşti.
Expoziţia conţine un număr de 50 de fotografii realizate de câţiva dintre membrii grupului pasionaţilor de fotografie FotoVest, imagini care surprind splendoarea naturii în diverse ipostaze şi invită la redescoperirea frumuseţilor din jurul nostru, pe care de multe ori uităm să le privim.
Acest eveniment este posibil cu sprijinul Iulius Mall, iar fotografiile vor fi expuse timp de 2 săptămâni, putând fi vizionate în fiecare zi de la ora 10:00 la 22:00.
Grupul FotoVest a fost fondat în anul 2009 şi reuneşte oameni a căror pasiune comună este fotografia. Membrii grupului se întâlnesc săptămânal, prilej cu care dezbat diverse teme fotografice, dar realizează şi fotografii de genul celor expuse în cadrul expoziţiei şi nu numai.
